The Frozen Yogurt Recipe That Changes The Game!

I have a confession to make: I absolutely love ice cream. It’s probably my favorite food in the world. However, I’m also trying to eat a bit healthier, so I’ve been exploring alternatives to traditional ice cream. One thing I don’t love about homemade ice cream and frozen yogurt is the time it takes to churn them into a dessert. That’s where this quick and easy recipe for frozen yogurt comes in!

Is Frozen Yogurt Healthy?

This recipe truly changes the game – you can have a high-protein, high-fiber snack that tastes like an indulgent dessert in under 10 minutes. All you have to do is mix together creamy yogurt with frozen fruit to create a soft-serve texture that you can eat as is or freeze for a firmer treat. Add a bit of sweetener and perhaps some vanilla, and you’re ready to enjoy a refreshing and nutritious snack.

Fruit is nutritious on its own (and high in fiber), and plain, Greek yogurt is a great source of vitamins, calcium, and protein. Plus, my kids are obsessed with this frozen yogurt recipe! I happily serve this as the dessert they think it is every single night.

QUICK TIP

Does Frozen Yogurt Have Dairy? Yes, it does. If you’re avoiding dairy, consider trying our healthy ice cream recipe instead. It’s one of our favorite non-dairy treats!

Ingredients for Frozen Yogurt

  • Yogurt: Since yogurt is the primary ingredient, make sure to get a good brand of it. I prefer Greek yogurt, but regular would work just as well. I also like my yogurt plain (unsweetened) so you can control how much added sugars are in this dessert. With that in mind, I grab plain, full-fat Greek yogurt when I’m at the grocery store. But if you prefer another type, it’ll still make a great frozen concoction.
  • Frozen fruit: Frozen fruit is easy to pick up at the grocery store, or you can freeze your own (see “quick tip” box below). I generally buy frozen fruit at the store and keep a supply ready in my freezer–for whenever the urge strikes. When buying or preparing frozen fruit, use small pieces; they’re much easier to blend. Pick sliced strawberries instead of whole ones, for instance. Sliced bananas, chunks of mango, thin sliced peaches,  and whole raspberries are all great choices.

Those are the only ingredients you really need: yogurt and frozen fruit. But if you’re like most people, you’ll want to add a few other ingredients. More on these below.

QUICK TIP

To freeze your own fruit: Line a baking sheet with parchment or wax paper. Arrange the fruit on the sheet so that none of the pieces are touching. Place the sheet in the freezer until the fruit is frozen solid, which usually takes several hours depending on the size of the fruit pieces and the temperature of your freezer. Once frozen, remove the fruit from the paper and store it in a freezer-safe container or bag. When choosing or preparing frozen fruit, it’s best to use small pieces as they are easier to blend.

Optional Frozen Yogurt Ingredients

  • Sweetener: Yogurt and fruit are the only ingredients you really need, but you may want to add a sweetener, especially if your yogurt is unsweetened. I like to use liquid stevia, but feel free to use sugar or any other sweetener that you prefer. Just keep in mind that syrups like honey can become gummy when they are very cold. Start with a small amount of sweetener and add more if needed, taking into account the tartness of the fruit you are using. Taste, and add more if you need it. Red raspberries are a lot more tart than bananas, after all!
  • Vanilla and Salt: Optional ingredients that can add flavor to your frozen yogurt include vanilla and a pinch of salt. Vanilla enhances the flavor of plain yogurt, and a small amount of salt can bring out the flavors of the other ingredients. Be sure not to add too much salt, as a little goes a long way. If you’re using a vanilla bean yogurt, you may not want to add additional vanilla to the recipe. The vanilla flavor in the yogurt will be sufficient.

How To Make Frozen Yogurt

When you’re ready to make your Frozen Yogurt, start by adding the yogurt, sweetener, optional salt, and vanilla to the bowl of a blender or food processor. Blend the ingredients together until well mixed. I recommend using about 1/2 cup of yogurt per serving, but you can adjust the amount based on your preferences.

Next, take the frozen fruit out of the freezer and measure out 1/2 cup per serving. Spread the fruit out in a bowl or on a plate so that you can add it to the blender a little at a time. This will prevent the motor from overheating if you add all the fruit at once. Using a powerful blender like a Vitamix® is helpful here, but if you only have a regular blender, a food processor may be a better option.

With the motor running, add two or three chunks of fruit and blend until the mixture is moderately smooth. Continue adding fruit a little at a time until you have a slushy, firm mixture. Serve the frozen yogurt right away or transfer it to a container and freeze it for a firmer dessert. Don’t let it freeze solid, as it will be difficult to scoop out. If this happens, allow the frozen yogurt to soften on the counter before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Choose a high-quality base: Use a good-quality, whole milk yogurt for the richest and creamiest frozen yogurt.
  • Add flavor: Experiment with different types of mix-ins, such as nuts, chocolate, coconut, or other ingredients, to add texture and flavor to your Frozen Yogurt. You can also use different extracts, such as lemon or almond, to add variety.
  • Experiment with combinations: Try mixing two or more different fruits in your frozen yogurt to create unique flavors. For example, you could combine frozen sliced strawberries and bananas or mango and pineapple.
  • Chill your ingredients: Make sure all of your ingredients are well chilled before you start making the frozen yogurt. The yogurt should be straight from the fridge, and the fruit should be kept in the freezer until you’re ready to use it.
  • Serve it right away: Frozen yogurt is best when it’s fresh out of the food processor. Enjoy it right away for the best texture and flavor.

QUICK TIP

Equipment: I like to use a Mini Food Processor when I’m making just enough fro-yo for myself. Depending on how much you want, though, a full-sized food processor might be a better choice. A blender will work, but you have to really add the fruit in small batches so you don’t overload the motor. If you have a blender with a top-mount motor (like a Ninja®), that works better than one with the motor on the bottom, unless it’s a heavy-duty machine. Think about making smoothies and how easy it is to bog down the motor: Same idea here.

Equipment

  • Mini Food Processor (Note 1)
  • Silicone spatula

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup plain, full-fat Greek yogurt (Note 2)
  • 1/2 cup small frozen fruit pieces (think: strawberry slices, banana, mango, blackberries, raspberries, etc.) (Note 3)
  • 1/8 teaspoon liquid stevia (or 1 tbsp. white sugar) (Note 4)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
  • tiny pinch of salt, optional

Instructions

  • COMBINE: Place yogurt, sweetener, optional vanilla and salt in the bowl of a small food processor or blender. Process briefly to combine.
  • ADD FRUIT: Add several pieces of frozen fruit and blend until fairly smooth. Repeat until most of the fruit is used and the yogurt mixture creates a soft-serve texture.
  • ENJOY: Serve immediately (we like it best right out of the food processor!), or freeze for later use. If your fro-yo freezes solid, let it stand at room temperature to soften.
