Chocolate For Breakfast? Yes Please!

Overnight oats were one of my go-to breakfasts in college. Mornings were always chaotic. I was usually running between classes, studying, and trying to grab something filling before heading out the door.

I started making overnight oats because they were quick and easy, but the version I kept coming back to was always the chocolate one (these Chocolate Almond Overnight Oats are also a fave). Something about chocolate in the morning just makes the day feel a little more fun.

Years later I started making them again for my kids, and this Brownie Batter Overnight Oats recipe quickly became a favorite. I mean, what kid is going to complain about chocolate for breakfast?

The combination of cocoa powder, chocolate milk, and almond butter gives these oats a deep chocolate flavor that really does taste like brownie batter. They are thick, creamy, and packed with flavor.

Brownie Batter Overnight Oats Ingredients

IngredientTips & Swaps
Almond ButterUse slow-roasted, lightly salted almond butter for the best flavor.
Chocolate Almond MilkAny milk will work, but chocolate almond milk adds the most chocolatey flavor.
Old-Fashioned OatsStick with old-fashioned oats. Steel-cut and quick oats won’t produce the same texture.
Maple SyrupLiquid stevia also works. Start with ¼ teaspoon, then adjust to taste.
Special Dark® Cocoa PowderAny Dutch-process cocoa powder works, but Hershey’s Special Dark is easy to find at most grocery stores.
Greek YogurtUse your favorite Greek yogurt. Honey Vanilla Greek Gods is my favorite.

Brownie Batter Overnight Oats notes

  • Serve Cold or Warm: Overnight oats are traditionally eaten cold, but you can warm them on the stovetop or in the microwave.
  • Choose Your Serving Size: This recipe makes one large, filling serving. For a lighter breakfast or snack, eat half and save the rest for later.
  • Add Toppings: Toppings are optional, but chocolate chips, almond butter, or pieces of a brownie protein bar are all delicious additions.

Storage

Store Brownie Batter Overnight Oats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, jar, or plastic container, combine the almond butter, Greek yogurt, chocolate milk, old fashioned oats, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, salt, and maple syrup.
  • Stir until all ingredients are well incorporated (see note 4). Taste the mixture and add any additional maple syrup if desired.
  • Cover the container and refrigerate overnight or until sufficiently cooled and thickened. Sometimes I make them in the morning, get ready, and then go eat them—they are great after 30 minutes in the fridge.
  • Once ready to serve, top oats with miniature chocolate chips if desired.

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Use an almond butter that you enjoy straight out of the jar. I like using an almond butter made with slow roasted almonds and sea salt. I find peanut butter overpowers the flavors in these oats, so I don’t recommend substituting.
Note 2: I love chocolate almond milk, but dairy chocolate milk also works. A vanilla unsweetened almond milk also works for a slightly less rich overnight oatmeal.
Note 3: Scale the sweetener up or down to personal preference—you may not even want any! I prefer 1 tablespoon maple syrup; use 2 tablespoons for more sweetness. Alternatively, use 1/4 teaspoon liquid stevia drops for a zero-calorie sweetener.
Note 4: As written, these overnight oats are intended to be quite creamy. If you prefer them thicker, add a few tablespoons of additional oats or 2 tablespoons chia seeds.
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Right! That’s the awesome thing about overnight oats! The oats get soft overnight from the milk and yogurt and also get more flavorful from the other additions. It’s my favorite breakfast on the go! I lived on overnight oats in college 🙂
