Author’s Notes

My Very First In-N-Out Run

When I started college, I met tons of people from California, and they all said the same thing: Utah had no good fast-food burgers because nothing compares to In-N-Out. And at the time, we didn’t even have one.

Then at the end of my freshman year, they announced one in St. George, Utah, about a 3½-hour drive away. My friends were so excited that we made a whole day of it and drove down so they could show me “the best burger ever” haha.

It was such a fun trip. I liked the burgers, didn’t love the fries, but I could not get enough of the sauce. That was easily my favorite part.

Now I’ve got one 10 minutes from my house, but I usually just make my own In-N-Out Sauce Recipe at home. This copycat is spot on and makes any burger or fry taste so much better!

In-N-Out Sauce Recipe Ingredients

IngredientLet’s Chat About It
MayoUse a good-quality mayo for the best flavor and smooth texture. I love Best Foods.
Ketchup & sugarThese add a little sweetness and that classic color. I like to use Heinz here, it just has the best flavor.
Sweet pickle relishChop if needed so this In-N-Out Sauce Recipe stays smooth, not chunky.
White vinegarAdds a little brightness and tang to balance everything nicely.
SaltStart small and adjust to taste at the end.

Quick Tip

Use good-quality ingredients for the best flavor. Since this sauce is so simple, every ingredient really stands out, and using lower-quality options can make it taste off.

Adding all the ingredients in this In-N-Out Sauce recipe to a bowl and whisking it together.

Chelsea’s Top Tip

Let It Sit Overnight!

The flavor gets noticeably better after a longer chill, so if you can, make it the day before and give it a quick stir before serving.

How To Use My In-N-Out Sauce Recipe

  • Burgers: Spread on buns for the best burger sauce!
  • Fries: Dip or drizzle over hot fries.
  • Chicken: Use as a dip for tenders, nuggets, or grilled chicken
  • Sandwiches: Add to wraps, deli sandwiches, or sliders
  • Bowls: Add to rice or burger bowls for extra flavor

Recipe Notes

Storage: Store this sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 to 5 days. Give it a quick stir before using since it can separate a bit as it sits. I don’t recommend freezing, as the texture won’t hold up once thawed.
