Author’s Notes

A Royally Good Breakfast

Princess Diana’s private chef shared the breakfast he used to make for her, and it’s been blowing up on social media. It’s kind of like a mix between overnight oats and muesli, which I already love, but the twist? Instead of soaking the oats overnight in milk or yogurt (like I usually do), he used orange juice.

Of course, I had to try it! I made one batch with freshly squeezed orange juice and another with clementine juice.

You guys…Princess Diana’s breakfast is AMAZING. I’m fully obsessed with it!

The toppings she loved take it over the top: a grated apple, creamy vanilla yogurt, fresh blueberries, toasted nuts, and a drizzle of honey. Absolute perfection.

And it’s so easy. Just squeeze citrus over oats, let them sit overnight, and pile on the toppings in the morning. Wow! Trust her to turn breakfast into something this iconic.

Princess Diana’s Breakfast Ingredients

IngredientTip
OatsUse old-fashioned oats for the best texture. Quick oats can get mushy, and steel-cut won’t soften enough overnight.
Clementine juiceFresh orange juice works too, but I liked the taste of clementines better. Juice the citrus yourself; don’t use store-bought juice.
Vanilla & saltA splash of vanilla and a pinch of salt make the oats taste balanced instead of flat.
Apple & blueberriesGrate the apple right before serving so it stays fresh. Blueberries add a pop of sweetness.
Walnuts, Greek yogurt & honeyLightly roast the nuts to make them crunchy, use thick good yogurt to make it rich, and drizzle with honey to sweeten it up.
The oats mixed with the orange juice, salt, and vanilla and left to sit overnight for this Princess Diana's Breakfast recipe.

Storage

Store the oats soaked in citrus juice in a sealed container in the fridge for 3–4 days. Add toppings right before eating and enjoy Princess Diana’s Breakfast while the fruit and nuts are fresh with crunch.

Recipe Notes

Note 1: To toast walnuts: add to a dry skillet over medium heat. Stir often for 4–6 minutes until fragrant and lightly browned. Remove right away so they don’t burn, then let cool.
Storage: Keep the citrus-soaked oats in a sealed jar or airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days. Store toppings separately and add them just before eating so the fruit stays crisp and the nuts keep their crunch.

How To Toast Walnuts

Princess Diana’s breakfast always included walnuts. To make them as flavorful as possible, toast them first:

  • Skillet method: Add walnuts to a dry skillet over medium heat. Stir often for 4–6 minutes until fragrant and lightly browned. Remove right away so they don’t burn, then let cool.
  • Oven method: Spread walnuts on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake at 350°F for 7–10 minutes, stirring halfway through, until golden and fragrant. Let cool before using.

Variations

Princess Diana’s Breakfast Variations

Nutty crunch: Try almonds, pecans, or pistachios instead.

Berry swap: Use raspberries, blackberries, or strawberries in place of blueberries.

Creamy twist: Switch vanilla Greek yogurt for plain, coconut, or honey-flavored yogurt.

Extra sweetness: Add golden raisins, dried cranberries, or chopped dates along with the fresh fruit.

I made this with some variations. I did not have enough oranges. I soaked the oats overnight in sugar free mango juice. Added a healthy spoon of Chobani sugar free yogurt and fresh blueberries. Absolutely delicious!

Breakfast fit for a Princess! I tried this morning and it was delicious. Next time I wonโ€™t use a whole apple, it seemed a bit much. For one serving, half an apple is plenty.

    Good Morning Chelsea,
I am a huge fan of the Steel Cut (quick cook) oats! How much soaking time would you recommend for this and other overnight oats recipes, that use them as well?

Thank you and have a lovely Sunday!
