Halloween Donuts

There are few things more exciting than dressing up and eating candy ALL night long.

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and has been increasing in popularity every year, becoming one of the most anticipated holidays of the calendar year.

If you’re throwing a party, Halloween is the perfect day for making themed treats that everyone will love. Halloween Donuts are some of the simplest treats to prepare. In fact the preparation is assembling pre-bought ingredients to look like vampires, spiders, mummies, and monsters. If you’re a visual learner, I recommend checking out the quick (one minute) video tutorial in this post. Below are written instructions. So, let’s get started!

Vampire variation with eye sprinkles and fake vampire teeth.

Halloween Donut #1: Vampire Donuts

Ingredients needed:

  • a dozen plain, glazed donuts (the ones pictured are Krispy Kremes®; not sponsored)
  • plastic vampire fangs (wash and dry thoroughly before using)
  • edible candy eyes (I like getting the small and large for a “scarier” looking vampire)
  • red edible gel (you know, for the ghoulish dramatic effects)

And now you’re in business for these donuts!

How to:

  • Partially close and then press the fangs centered into the donut a little more than halfway down the donut.
  • Pipe some edible gel from one side of the fangs down the donut. (Gel tends to run; use as little as possible.)
  • Use edible gel to attach the eyes — put a little gel on the back of the eyes and press on the top half of the donut.
  • Serve quickly after assembling. (These don’t do well being made ahead of time.)

Spider chocolate donuts with candy eyes and pretzels coming out to create spider legs.

Halloween Donut #2: Spider Donuts

Ingredients needed:

How to:

  • Use a knife or your hands to break pretzels to look like spider legs. Heads up: there will be a lot of casualties and it’s fairly frustrating at the start, but it gets easier.
  • Gently press the tops of the broken pretzels into the sides of the donut to look like legs.
  • Pipe* a small amount of frosting on the back of the edible candy eyes and attach to the donut. Alternatively, you can melt chocolate and attach them that way.

*To pipe: Fill a small plastic bag with frosting or melted chocolate and cut off the very tip of the bag. Pipe frosting through the bag onto the back of the edible eye candies.

QUICK TIP

When piping frosting, here are a few tips to make the job a breeze: (1)Fold the edge of the plastic bag down to create a sleeve; that way, when you’re loading in the frosting, the top won’t get messy. (2)When you get the frosting loaded into the bag, twist the top of the bag a few times so that when you apply pressure, the frosting doesn’t ooze out the top. (3)When you snip off the tip of the bag to pipe the frosting, make the tiniest snip possible. Especially if you have small details to make, a small opening will provide more control.

Mummy variation of the dessert with candy eyes and white chocolate drizzled.

Halloween Donut #3: Mummy Donuts

Ingredients needed:

  • Mini powdered sugar donuts generally in the treats/cookie aisle of grocery store
  • Small edible candy eyes
  • White chocolate chips plus a little vegetable oil

How to:

Since white chocolate hardens quickly, I like to work in several batches.
In a microwave-safe bowl, place 1/2 cup of white chocolate chips and 1/4 tablespoon vegetable oil in the microwave.
Microwave for 30 seconds, stir, and microwave for another 25 seconds. Stir until melted or return to the microwave for a little longer. Add more vegetable oil if needed.

Hold the donut in one hand, and using a spoon in the other hand, scoop the melted chocolate over the top 2/3 of the donuts.

Lightly tap the donuts on the edge of the bowl to get a nice even coating of chocolate.
Place the dipped donuts on prepared baking sheet and allow to dry completely.
Repeat another batch with remaining donuts.

Place all the leftover white chocolate (Make sure it is still very melted — place in microwave for another 15 seconds if needed.) into a small plastic bag (or a frosting bag fitted with a #2 tip).

Cut the very edge corner off the bag and then pipe the melted white chocolate over the donuts to form the “bandages” of the mummy.
Secure 2 sprinkle eyes on the wet chocolate.

Halloween Donut #4: Monster Donuts

Since this one is a *tiny* bit more involved; I’ve included the full procedure in the recipe card below.

Resting Time (For glaze to set) 20 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes

Calories 101kcal

Ingredients

  • 12 prepared plain (glazed) donuts (I use Krispy Kremes)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • cup heavy cream (or whole milk)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • tiny pinch of salt
  • Colored jimmie sprinkles (I use green and purple)
  • Edible eyes (an assortment of small and large)
  • Edible gel

Instructions

  • To make the monster donut, whisk together the powdered sugar, heavy cream, vanilla, and a pinch of salt until smooth. Once smooth, dip the (tops only) donuts into the glaze and shake off the excess. (If there is too much the sprinkles will fall to the sides.) Immediately dip glazed donuts into a bowl filled with the sprinkles. Use edible gel to attach the eyes (put a little gel on the back of the eyes and attach). Give the donuts 20+ minutes for the glaze to set.
  • In addition to the monster, you can also make vampire, mummy and spider donuts. (See Note 1.)
