This breakfast smoothie, believe it or not, is healthy! Which is pretty awesome considering it tastes like a pie. A delicious key lime pie nonetheless.

But it does have some fairly unique ingredients. I mean, none that you wouldn’t know about, but probably ones you wouldn’t think you’d find in a key lime pie smoothie.

The first ingredient is what this whole smoothie is focused around – key lime pie yogurt. Have you guys ever tried this yogurt? I bought it on a whim and am completely obsessed. I mean, I’m a vanilla yogurt kind of girl and this yogurt had me smitten at first bite.

Anyways, so that’s not too unique right? – because the whole point of this smoothie is to taste like a key lime pie, so you’d gotta think there would be something key-limey right? Yep. Key lime pie yogurt.

Now the different ingredients? That would be the fruit and veggies that go in this shake. First off, a banana. Not too crazy because frozen bananas add incredible consistency to a smoothie and make it thick and creamy like ice cream. The one that’s not so normal – a mango! It’s the perfect amount of tropical flavor for this shake and adds an amazing amount of sweetness – that is, if your mango is completely ripe. Finally, a small handful of spinach.

And by small, I really mean not too much. I’m not a huge fan of spinach in my shakes (I know, I’m weird). But if there is just a little, I can deal with it. And can’t really taste it. And besides, you need to get the green color from something….

Oh. And PS. don’t leave off the topping! Every key lime smoothie needs a lil bit of whipped cream and crushed graham cracker crumbs! :)

Key Lime Pie Breakfast Smoothie

Ingredients
  • 1 (6 ounce) key lime pie yogurt (I used Yoplait lite)
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, or sub another milk
  • 1 large banana, frozen
  • 1 ripe mango (~1 cup), frozen
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon truvia, or sub another sweetener
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Small handful (~1/3 cup) spinach
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum (makes it thicker), 3 tablespoons vanilla protein powder
  • Optional garnish: 1 graham cracker, reduced-fat whipped topping
Instructions
  1. Before making this smoothie, have a banana peeled, coined, and frozen. Also peel and remove the pit of the mango. Chop into pieces and freeze.
  2. In a blender, combine the yogurt, milk, frozen banana, frozen mango, vanilla extract, sweetener of choice, lime juice, and spinach. (Increase spinach amounts of desired)
  3. If desired add in the xanthan gum and vanilla protein powder.
  4. Blend until completely smooth.
  5. Optionally garnish with whipped topping and a few graham cracker crumbs
Notes
If desired, you can add 1/2-1 cup of ice for a thicker and larger shake.

    Key Lime pie in lighter form….bring it! It’s the color that does it for me, the light green…looks healthy but not to spinach-y.

    But I do love my spinach in smoothies, helps me justify skipping my workout for the day.

    Looks like the perfect Mother’s Day breakfast, because after all these brunch ideas I’m seeing, I’d better cut calories somewhere!

    I’ve been eating muffins and smoothies for breakfast lately and finally feel good about breakfast again! haha I was in such a rut! This looks awesome – I love throwing a handful of spinach in my smoothies!

    I am SO hooked on Key Lime Pie yogurt! My fridge is always stocked with that flavor and the orange creamsicle… which I will sometimes freeze for fro-yo in the middle of summer. This smoothie has my name written ALL over it! Think I’ll have one with a slice of the key lime pie I made ;)

    I loooovvveee key lime pie and would definitely want it in smoothie form for breakfast! I have a slight mango obsession and always keep a bag of frozen chunks in my freezer – for snacking and smoothies and eating with yogurt. This is great!

    This is such a fun idea for a smoothie! I haven’t had the key lime pie yogurt yet, but I totally want to try it. Love all the other good things you added to this smoothie too! I’ve always been weary of putting spinach in smoothies, but if it taste like pie, why not? :)

    Key lime pie is one of my absolute favourite desserts! This smoothie sounds scrumptious, and a good substitute for folks with a sweet tooth who are trying to combat cravings!
