The Best Turkey Sandwich Ever!

Remember that killer English Muffin Sandwich recipe I raved about recently? Well, it’s made countless appearances in my kitchen. Hubby can’t get enough, I’m head over heels, and even the kiddos are on board (minus the feta – their loss, right?).

We’ve switched things up a bit since, experimenting with some different flavors. And this version? It’s our top-pick turkey sandwich! It’s familiar, yet different enough to keep things interesting. And if you’re on a protein kick? This sandwich has your back with plenty, thanks to the deli turkey! This sandwich is a wholesome combo of carbs, healthy fats, and solid protein– plus it’s packed with veggies, making it super satisfying.

And while I usually think “lunch” when I hear “sandwich”, this one’s a game changer. It’s hearty enough to own the dinner table, giving off those gourmet dinner vibes.

English Muffin Sandwich Ingredients

  • Sweet potato hash brown patty: Let me rave about Strong Roots® sweet potato hash browns for a moment. They’re nothing short of amazing! And no, this isn’t a paid plug – I’m just genuinely obsessed. When air fried, they strike the perfect balance between a crispy exterior and a melt-in-your-mouth, creamy center. Plus, they’re brimming with flavor and chock full of wholesome ingredients.
  • English muffins: You can also try whole grain or sourdough English muffins for a health boost and a different flavor profile.
  • Mayo: Choose a high-quality mayonnaise for the best flavor; Best Foods/Hellman’s® mayonnaise is our favorite. Just a touch of garlic powder adds a nice savoriness and loads of flavor!
  • Deli turkey: Meat from the deli is our favorite, but truly, any will work. We like thin slices best here, and we love smoked turkey best in this sandwich. Not a fan of turkey? Try deli chicken — it’s also delicious in this recipe!

  • Arugula or baby spinach: Look for crisp, vibrant leaves and avoid any that are wilted or discolored. Mixing both arugula and spinach offers a blend of peppery and mild flavors; we choose this blend from the store to add to these Turkey Sandwiches.
  • Avocado (or avocado minis): To check ripeness, gently press the top near the stem; it should give slightly but not be too mushy. Store unripe avocados at room temperature, but pop them in the fridge once they’re ripe to prolong freshness. For this sandwich, a perfectly ripe avocado makes all the difference. If you’re short on a fresh one, these packaged avocado minis make a great substitute. Opt for a pack that lists Hass avocados as its only ingredient (steer clear of guacamole mixes). Half of one mini pack is just the right swap for a fresh avocado in these sandwiches.
  • Goat cheese (or feta): Fresh goat cheese has a creamy, tangy profile that complements many ingredients. If you’re not a fan of the tanginess, feta can be a milder substitute. 

Process shots: toast the English muffins; spread with mayo and garlic powder; add avocado and greens; top with turkey.

How To Make The Best Turkey Sandwich (Tips)

  • The importance of toasting: Toasting the English muffin not only enhances its flavor by introducing the perfect crunch, but it’s also crucial for avoiding a soggy sandwich. Toasting creates a barrier, making it harder for wet ingredients to seep into the bread, thus keeping it crisp and enjoyable.
  • Cheese varieties: If feta or goat cheese isn’t your thing, consider using Swiss, Provolone, or a good, sharp white Cheddar. 
  • Veggies: Don’t shy away from adding more veggies! Red onions, micro greens, or even alfalfa sprouts can add an extra layer of freshness.
  • Seasoning: A little salt and pepper on the avocado can make a world of difference!
  • Avocado storage: Popped open an avocado and only used half? No worries–keep the pit in the unused half, pop it in an air-tight bag, and stash it in the fridge. This little trick slows down the browning process. When you’re ready to use it again, just shave off the slightly browned top layer to reveal the fresh, creamy goodness underneath!

What To Serve With A Turkey Sandwich

Given the hearty nature of the sandwich, complementary sides that are light and refreshing will enhance the overall meal experience. Here are some ideas:

  • Pickled sides: Whether it’s classic pickles or tangy pickled red onions, these add a burst of crunch that nicely complements the meal.
  • Raw veggies: Crunchy veggies like cucumbers, carrots, mini bell peppers, and celery paired with Hummus or Pesto offer a fresh and healthy bite on the side.

Ingredients

  • 1 sweet potato hash brown patty (Note 1)
  • 1 English muffin, toasted
  • 1 tbsp Good-quality mayo, plus a pinch of garlic powder
  • 2 slices deli turkey
  • Handful arugula/baby spinach (about a half cup)
  • ¼ large ripe avocado thinly sliced (or avocado minis) (Note 2)
  • Fine sea salt and pepper
  • 1 tablespoon goat cheese (or feta; or a slice of sharp white Cheddar cheese)

Instructions

  • HASH BROWN: Follow package directions to cook the sweet potato hash brown. I like air frying it best!
  • ENGLISH MUFFIN: Place the English muffin halves in a toaster or oven until they're nicely browned. Allow them to cool slightly so they become crisp.
  • ASSEMBLE:
    Mayo: Spread a generous amount of mayonnaise on the inner sides of both muffin halves. Lightly sprinkle on garlic powder.
    Avocado, Greens, and Turkey: Place the thinly sliced avocado on one half of the muffin. Sprinkle salt and pepper on top. On the other half, lay down your greens. Fold turkey and add on top of the avocado.
    Hash Brown and Cheese: Place the cooked sweet potato patty on top of the turkey. Add goat cheese on top of the greens.
  • ENJOY: Press the two halves together. For best flavor and texture, serve immediately and enjoy!

Note 1: Sweet potato hash brown patty: We're obsessed with Strong Roots® sweet potato hash browns! They're nothing short of amazing, especially right out of the air fryer. Check if your local store carries them; if not, any sweet potato hash brown patty you enjoy will work!
