Easy Monte Cristo Sliders

A good Monte Cristo sandwich recipe doesn’t take all that much time to make, but between pan-frying or deep-frying a couple of sandwiches at a time, it all adds up.

So in today’s shortcut recipe, we’re taking the work out of individually frying sandwiches — we’re baking them all together all at once. You’ll be amazed how quickly this recipe comes together. One thing for sure, you’ll be surprised how quickly they disappear once they hit the table!

Why is this sandwich called a Monte Cristo? Alexander Dumas wrote a French novel, “The Count of Monte Christo” and the sandwiches are a tribute to that. The sandwich’s name suggests French origins, perhaps a variation on the French Croque Monsieur.

What Does A Monte Cristo Sandwich Contain?

Traditionally, a Monte Cristo is a triple-decker sandwich with ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese. The assembled sandwich is then dipped in an egg/custard batter and pan-fried (or deep-fried) until golden. Most Monte Cristos are served with jam–drizzled over, cooked inside, or garnished.

But these sliders — a Monte Cristo One-Pan Bake if you will, are even easier to make! No dredging or frying of individual sandwiches; we make them all at once. These Monte Cristo Sliders make the perfect appetizer or easy meal.

Plus, these sliders aren’t too far off from their sandwich counterpart. Here’s a breakdown of the main ingredients:

  • Hawaiian Sweet Dinner RollsThese soft, a little sweet, and buttery rolls are perfection. They crisp up nicely in the oven.
  • Turkey and Ham. Meat from the deli is our favorite, but truly any will work (we’ve tested with both!). We like thin slices best here, and we love smoked turkey and honey ham or black forest ham best in these sliders.
  • Swiss cheese. We love baby Swiss cheese in these sliders, but any Swiss cheese works.
  • Dijon mustard. Make sure it’s Dijon, not yellow mustard; we love Grey Poupon® best on these sliders.
  • Raspberry jam. If you’ve tried our Oatmeal Jam Bars, you likely know how much we love Bonne Maman’s® jams — their raspberry jam is perfection with these sliders.

What Does a Monte Cristo Taste Like?

A Monte Cristo recipe combines the elements of sweet and savory in an unforgettable way.

Think — a combination of a toasted ham and cheese sandwich with French toast.

We’ve got the sweet elements from the French toast aspect of these sliders (the egg custard, powdered sugar, and jam) with savory and salty notes from the ham, turkey, and Swiss.

How To Make Monte Cristo Sliders

  • Separate the rolls. Using a sharp, serrated knife, slice the whole package of rolls in half without separating, so you have a top and bottom slab— you want the bottom slightly thicker than the top.
  • Make the Dijon spread. Only two ingredients — Dijon mustard and butter. Spread this on the inside layers of both slabs of rolls — yum!
  • Add cheese and meat. Put down a layer of cheese, a layer of ham, a layer of turkey, and another layer of cheese. Top with the other half of the rolls.
  • Make buttery topping. Whisk together some melted butter and an egg then brush over the rolls.
  • Bake. Cover the rolls and bake! Slice ’em up and enjoy these hot Monte Cristo Sliders straight out of the oven!

Serve the sandwiches with a side of raspberry or blackberry jam. It may sound strange, but it’s the perfect finishing touch to these sweet and savory sliders.

Enjoy these sliders right out of the oven with nicely crisped rolls and perfectly melted cheese.

For leftovers, allow the sandwiches to cool to room temperature and then store them in air-tight containers in the fridge. (Monte Cristo Sliders do get softer and slightly soggy each day they sit in the fridge.)

FAQ: Can I Freeze Monte Cristo Sliders?

While texturally they are slightly different, it still works well. Prepare the sliders up to the step of covering them with a glaze, but don’t bake. Wrap the 9×13-inch pan tightly with plastic wrap a few times and store it in an airtight container in the freezer. Freeze for 3-6 months. When ready to eat, thaw in the fridge overnight and bake as directed.

Monte Cristo Siders

Monte Cristo Sliders are an easier twist on the classic Monte Cristo Sandwich! Hawaiian rolls loaded with Swiss, ham, and turkey are baked in a rich egg custard, dusted with powdered sugar, and served with berry jamโ€”total perfection!

Equipment

  • Baking pan 9 x 13-inch
  • Aluminum foil

Ingredients 
 

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 (12-count) package Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls
  • 8 ounces deli ham honey ham or Black Forest ham
  • 8 to 9 ounces deli smoked turkey thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces baby Swiss cheese thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons Dijon-style mustard see note 1
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter divided
  • Powdered sugar for topping
  • Jam raspberry, strawberry, or blackberry, for serving

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 400ยฐF and generously spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. Set aside.
  • Unwrap rolls and use a sharp serrated/bread knife to slice the entire package of rolls in half while keeping individual rolls intact. This will form two slabs of rolls. Place the bottom half of the rolls in the prepared pan.ย 
  • In a small bowl, combine the Dijon and 3 tbsp of melted and cooled butter. Briskly mix until smooth, then spread half the mustard mixture over the bottom half of the rolls in the baking pan. On the cut side of the top half of the rolls, spread the rest of the mixture evenly on top.
  • Evenly top the mustard-covered rolls with half the Swiss cheese slices. Add ham on top, then turkey. Finish with the remaining cheese slices. Gently press down into an even layer. Add the top slab of the rolls on top.
  • In another small bowl, add the remaining 3 tablespoons of melted butter and the egg. Briskly whisk until smooth. Use a pastry brush to brush the mixture over the top and sides of the rolls. (Itโ€™s ok if there is a little left over. Donโ€™t feel like you have to use it allโ€”I usually have about 2 tbsp left.)
  • Cover pan loosely with foil. (Make sure foil doesnโ€™t touch the top of the rolls or it will stick! Use toothpicks if needed to lift the foil.) Bake in preheated oven for 20 minutes. Uncover and bake another 5โ€“10 minutes, or until rolls are nicely golden and cheese is melted. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes before slicing the rolls apart with a sharp knife.
  • Sprinkle powdered sugar over the top, if desired, and serve hot with jam on the side.

Note 1: Make sure you use Dijon, not yellow mustard. The better the quality of Dijon, the better the flavor. Some brands are more pungent than others. I love Grey Pouponยฎ best.
