Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie

After hearing so many good things about Daily Harvest smoothies, I decided it was time to try them and find some new recipe ideas to share with you all. I ordered almost every smoothie they offer and, as I hoped, got lots of inspiration. My favorite was their Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie.

Luckily, I ordered two of this flavor and enjoyed every drop. As soon as it was gone, I decided to make my own version and started experimenting. It took a few tries, but I finally nailed it. This blueberry-banana-chocolate-protein smoothie tastes just the same!

Now, to make things as easy as Daily Harvest, I prepare the ingredients for this Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie in reusable freezer bags. When I want a smoothie, I just pour the bag into a blender, add a cup of milk, and blend — just as easy as Daily Harvest! Plus, once you buy the ingredients, each smoothie costs much less!

Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie Ingredients

On each smoothie container, Daily Harvest lists the ingredients contained; each ingredient they use is organic. If that is a priority for you, be sure to check the packages to ensure the ingredients you are using are in fact organic.

  • Frozen wild blueberries: Make sure to use wild blueberries, not regular ones! Wild blueberries are smaller and have less water, which makes them much more flavorful. They have an intense, tangy taste and are sweeter compared to regular blueberries.
  • Frozen banana: The banana makes the smoothie sweet and thick. It also helps keep you full. Use a fully ripe banana and freeze it, or buy frozen ripe bananas.
  • Medjool dates: We use dates to add natural sweetness to the smoothie. They blend well and give the smoothie both nutrients and a sweet taste.
  • Kale and spinach: I like to buy a bag of mixed baby kale and spinach, then freeze it. This way, it lasts longer and can be added to many smoothies. Freezing the greens makes their flavors less noticeable, which is great if you want the nutrients without the green taste. Don’t like kale? Just add spinach for a Chocolate Blueberry Spinach Smoothie.

  • Almond butter: Almond butter gives the smoothie lots of flavor, protein, and healthy fats, making it more filling. Choose a slow-roasted and lightly salted almond butter that you like to eat by itself. If you don’t like the taste of the almond butter on its own, it won’t add much to the smoothie.
  • Special dark cocoa powder: Dutch-process cocoa powder adds a deep, rich chocolate flavor, which is perfect for this Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie. You can find Hershey’s® “Special Dark” cocoa powder, a type of Dutch-process cocoa, at most grocery stores.
  • Vanilla extract and salt: These add flavor to the smoothie! The salt helps to bring out and balance all the other flavors — a little bit is all you need!
  • Maca powder: This is optional, but we add it to our Daily Harvest smoothie. People call maca root powder a superfood and a nutritional powerhouse.

Quick Tip

Make a Chocolate Blueberry Peanut Butter Smoothie by replacing the almond butter with peanut butter. A peanut flavor is more present, but delicious nonetheless!

Process shots: Blending the ingredients to make a Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie

How To Make A Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie

  1. To make sure the dates blend smoothly, soak them in boiling water first. Start by soaking the dates, and they’ll be ready by the time you’ve prepared everything else. They only need a few minutes in the hot water to get soft. Make sure to remove any pits before blending! If the dates don’t soften, you’ll get chunks in your smoothie, and it won’t be sweet enough.
  2. Blend twice: First, blend the milk and dates together. This gives the dates enough time to break down without having to blend everything too much, which can make the smoothie runny. Once the dates are smooth, add the other ingredients and blend again.
  3. Check the smoothie: Give it a quick stir to make sure everything is mixed and smooth before pouring it into a glass. If you find any chunks, blend it again. But don’t over-blend, or the smoothie won’t be as thick!
  4. If needed, add a little maple syrup, stevia, or honey to make the smoothie sweeter. (I think the dates are sweet enough, but it depends on the sweetness of the dates and fruit you use.)

Quick Tip

Make Blueberry Chocolate Smoothie packets! Measure everything out except the milk and add to freezer bags. When ready to enjoy, pop the contents of the bag into the blender along with 1 cup of milk and enjoy!

Quick Tip

It might be easier to just throw everything together without measuring, but I recommend measuring the ingredients the first few times to get the right proportions for this Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie. If you add random amounts, you might end up with too much smoothie or a bad taste.

Storage

Enjoy this healthy Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie right after blending for the best taste. It doesn’t sit, store, or re-freeze well.

Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie

This Chocolate Blueberry Smoothie is a Daily Harvest copycat -- a nutritional powerhouse beverage that makes a great filling breakfast or snack!
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Overnight Freezing Time: 8 hours
Total Time: 8 hours 10 minutes
Servings: 1 -2 smoothies

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup frozen sliced banana (Note 1)
  • 3/4 cup frozen wild blueberries (Note 2)
  • 1/3 cup frozen kale and spinach blend (Note 3)
  • 2 medjool dates, soaked
  • 1 tablespoon roasted and salted almond butter
  • 1 tablespoon Dutch-process cocoa powder
  • tiny pinch fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk of choice (we use unsweetened vanilla almond milk)
  • 1/2 teaspoon maca powder, optional
  • Optional: 4 ice cubes

Instructions

  • NIGHT BEFORE:ย Peel the banana and slice into coins. Place the coins in a sealed bag in the freezer the night before making this smoothie. Measure out spinach and kale blend and freeze that as well. If you'd like, soak your dates the night before as well (see next step).
  • SOAKย DATES: (Note 4) Set dates in a small heat-safe (glass) bowl. Pour 1 cup of very hot (or boiling) water over the dates. Let stand for about 4-5 minutes. This ensures the dates blend up nicely. Once they've soaked, thoroughly drain and make sure the pits have been removed.
  • FIRST BLEND: Combine dates and milk. Blend until very smooth, about 90-120 seconds.
  • SECOND BLEND: Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth, about 60 seconds. Stir to ensure smoothie is smooth and enjoy immediately!

Recipe Notes

Note 1: Frozen Banana: The banana sweetens and thickens the smoothie beautifully. It also ensures the smoothie is filling! Make sure to freeze aย fully ripeย banana or grabย already frozen ripe bananas!
Note 2: Frozen wild blueberries: Itโ€™s important to use wild, not regular blueberries! Wild blueberries are smaller and more compact than regular blueberries. This means they have less water content and much more flavor.
Note 3: Greens: I pick a bag with baby kale and spinachย mixed together and then freeze it so it lasts for a long time and makes a lot of smoothies. When frozen, the flavors are definitely less present in the smoothie, which is what we're going for. Freeze night before making the smoothie.
Note 4: Soaking dates: To ensure the dates blend up nice and smooth, we soak them in boiling water first. Start the smoothie prep by getting the dates soaking and theyโ€™ll be soft and ready by the time everything else is in the blender. They only need a few minutes in the boiling water to soften. Be sure to remove any pits from the dates before blending! If the dates aren't softened, you'll end up with chunks of dates in the smoothie.
