Boring Sandwiches Are Out!
I’ve made a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches over the years, and it’s always been one of those easy, no-thought-needed lunches that I can throw together fast and know my kids will eat without complaint. It’s simple, reliable, and honestly kind of on repeat around here.
But the first time I tried air frying one, it completely changed the way I think about a basic sandwich. The bread turns golden and crisp on the outside, almost like it was grilled, while the inside gets warm, soft, and perfectly melty. It still has all the flavors of a classic PB&J, but the texture makes it feel like something totally new and way more exciting.
Once I got the timing down and figured out the right amount of filling to use with thick-cut bread, I started playing around with different combinations. That’s how these four versions came together, and now I rotate through them depending on what we’re in the mood for. Some feel more like a quick lunch, others lean dessert, but every single one disappears fast.
Now my kids literally beg for these sandwiches, and somehow lunch feels a whole lot more exciting with almost no extra effort.

Air Fryer Sandwich Ingredients
- Bread. The bread makes all the difference! We want to use thick-sliced bread like Texas Toast. This particular type of bread is sliced thicker than regular sandwich bread– which we’re relying on. If the bread is too thick, the fillings won’t get gooey; too thin, and the sandwich will be flimsy. Aim for bread sliced about 1-inch thick.
- Softened butter. It’s important the butter is thoroughly softened so it spreads easily without mashing up or flattening the bread. Plus, we want an even layer of fat to ensure the perfect bread toasting. See “quick tip” below.
- Fillings. It may seem like a lot of peanut butter and/or jelly (or marshmallow fluff), but with the thicker bread, it’s important to avoid losing the fillings in the sea of bread!
- Banana. For the Air Fryer Sandwich recipes that call for a banana, you want a ripe but firm banana. If the bananas are overripe, they’ll get a bit mushy when air fried.
Quick Tip
Here’s how to soften butter quickly: Unwrap butter and place it on a plate. Then, fill up a wide liquid measuring cup with 1 cup of water. Microwave the water for 2 minutes or until really hot; then pour out the water and quickly dry the cup. Invert the hot measuring cup on top of the butter. Let stand for about 5-10 minutes.

Tips For How To Make An Air Fryer Sandwich
- Spread softened butter all the way to the edges for a crispy exterior.
- Don’t skimp on the fillings. I want more than just bread.
- I use and love this Air Fryer. Cook times can vary slightly by model. Once it’s preheated, each sandwich cooks a little faster.

- PB&J: Lay out 2 pieces of bread. Spread peanut butter on one side and jelly on the other. Sandwich the two together. Spread softened butter in an even layer, covering the outer sides of the sandwich (both sides). Place in air fryer basket and air fry at 400℉ for 4–5 minutes. Let slightly cool, slice in half, and enjoy!
- PB Honey and Banana: Lay out 2 pieces of bread. Spread peanut butter on one side, top with thin slices of banana, and drizzle honey evenly over everything. I like to add a teeny pinch of salt. Let cool slightly, slice in half, and enjoy!

Air Fryer Sandwich FAQs
I’ve never had a problem with bread going wayward if using Texas Toast. However, if using a different or more flimsy bread, you may want to attach the sandwich and secure it with toothpicks in the corner.
I like these sandwiches best at 4-5 minutes!
To crisp up a sandwich in an air fryer, spread softened butter all the way to the edges of the bread, then air fry until golden. A preheated air fryer will cook it even faster and crispier.

As chelsea’s brother in law I can say these sandwiches are GAME CHANGERS in the air fryer! So good!
