This easy Flatbread Pizza can be prepped in 15 minutes or less, thanks to all the store-bought shortcuts we’re using. We start with packaged flatbread — we use naan in this recipe and you’re going to be blown away by what a great stand-in it is for pizza dough!

Flatbread Pizza

Flatbread Pizza

Making pizzas on flatbreads like naan have been one of my go-tos since my college days! The ingredients are relatively inexpensive, they’re ridiculously quick to make, and they are seriously loaded with flavor and texture.

Plus they make a great “clear out the fridge” kind of meal — whatever veggies or leftover proteins you’ve got lurking in the back of the fridge can get added to naan with some cheese and baked to perfection!

Now that I’m no longer in college, I still make these all the time — my family constantly requests them!

Naan

Both naan and pitas are categorized as flatbreads — they each have a yeast-raised dough. One of the differences between the two is that naan is typically made with an egg and yogurt base which thickens and gives it a different texture while cooking.

While pitas work great for flatbread pizzas, we prefer using naan as a pizza base. Stonefire® is our favorite brand (not sponsored), but any naan will work. Different flatbreads will also work; just make sure that whatever you are using has some thickness so it doesn’t get too crispy in the oven. For thinner flatbreads, you’ll want to watch the bake time carefully — it may not need as long.

I love picking up a big (6-count) package of naan and using a couple for these Flatbread Pizzas and then in some other meals throughout the week. Here are some of our favorites:

Flatbread Pizza Ingredients

  • Pizza sauce. Our favorite pizza sauce is made by Rao’s® (not sponsored) — either the plain or Margherita. It’s got an amazing depth of flavor and some good texture to it. Rao’s marinara is another favorite on flatbread pizzas and we’ll sometimes even use Muir Glen® fire-roasted crushed tomatoes.
  • Rotisserie chicken. We love using leftover seasoned rotisserie chicken for this recipe. Alternatively, use some leftover grilled chicken. Or make this pizza vegetarian and leave off the meat! See the “quick tip” box below for a time-saving tip.
  • Veggies. Pretty much any veggies can go on flatbread pizzas, so feel free to get creative here! This particular recipe uses sweet bell peppers and red onion. Check out the “variations” paragraph below for some more ideas.
  • Mozzarella cheese. Our go-to cheese for flatbread pizzas is typically mozzarella since it goes so well with just about everything and melts nicely. We’ll also occasionally add some grated Parmesan cheese on top of these pizzas right out of the oven — yum!
  • Fresh basil. I love adding herbs to these pizzas — it adds such a nice freshness and really elevates the flavor. While not completely necessary, if you’ve got some fresh basil around, you’ll love what it does for this pizza.

QUICK TIP

Pre-cooked and seasoned chicken is a total time saver on its own, but to save even more time, you can purchase rotisserie chicken meat already pulled from the bones and shredded or diced — a lot of grocery stores sell this conveniently prepared chicken!

Flatbread Pizza Variation Ideas

  • Margherita pizza: top naan with pizza sauce, mozzarella, and thinly sliced garden-fresh tomatoes. Top with fresh basil when you take it out of the oven.
  • Meat lovers: Throw bacon, sausage, pepperoni, ham, etc. on top of your sauce (try Alfredo sauce instead) and cheese.
  • Veggie packed: Add a variety of different veggies on top of your Flatbread Pizzas. Try mushrooms, artichokes, zucchini, broccoli, tomatoes, olives, fresh corn, spinach, arugula, etc.
  • Sauce on top: Drizzle on some fresh basil-pesto, BBQ sauce, ranch, buffalo sauce, etc.
  • Make garlic bread: Add some butter, cheese, garlic, and salt or use garlic naan as the base (instead of plain naan).
  • Change your cheese: Try a different cheese or a combination of a few different types of cheeses.

Flatbread Pizza FAQs

1How is flatbread different from pizza?

Flatbread is thinner and crispier than regular pizza crust. Regular pizza crust is characterized by how thick and chewy it is.

2Do you have to cook flatbread?

In this recipe, we are using pre-made flatbread — naan. So while the naan has already been baked (and can be eaten straight out of a package), we still need to cook it through to melt the cheese and cook the pizza toppings.

3How do you heat flatbread?

We cook this pizza in the oven. You can also heat flatbread in an air fryer, microwave, grill, or stovetop if needed.

4How to you make a Flatbread Pizza?

  • Preheat oven: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Prep naan: Place naan on a lined sheet pan and brush with olive oil.
  • Add toppings: Spread the pizza sauce over the top of the flatbread, then put the slices of mozzarella cheese on, followed by chicken, peppers, and red onions.
  • Bake: Bake the pizza at 400 degrees F for 8-10 minutes.
  • Serve: Let the pizza cool for 1-2 minutes then slice and enjoy immediately.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (8.8 ounces) Naan We like original Stonefire Naan (2 breads in a package)
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce Suggested: Rao's Margherita Pizza Sauce or Rao's Marinara or Muir Glen fire-roasted crushed tomatoes
  • 3 ounces mozzarella cheese, very thinly sliced (~2/3 cup)
  • 1 cup rotisserie chicken or other prepared leftover chicken
  • 3/4 cup red and orange bell pepper slices (or just use 1 bell pepper!)
  • 1/3 cup thinly sliced red onion
  • Small basil leaves, optional
  • Fine sea salt and extra virgin olive oil

Instructions

  • PREP: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. While the oven is heating, line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a Silpat liner (don't use wax paper or tin foil). Lining the pan is important so the naan doesn't get too crisp on bottom. Set both naans on the lined sheet. Lightly drizzle the naans with olive oil (about 1/2 teaspoon per naan). Bake in the oven for 2 minutes and then remove. This will keep the Naan from getting soggy!
  • VEGGIE/CHICKEN PREP: Very thinly slice the peppers and red onion. Chop the chicken into small pieces.
  • CHEESE/VEGGIES: While naans are baking, thinly slice the mozzarella cheese. Pull the naan out of the oven after 2 minutes and spread 1/4 cup of pizza sauce evenly on each naan, leaving about 1/2-inch of crust around the outside.
  • BAKE AGAIN: Divide sliced mozzarella cheese evenly between the 2 naans, arranging over the sauce and pressing in gently. Dividing evenly among the 2 pizzas, top each with the peppers, chicken, and red onion slices. Press these toppings in very gently. Return pizzas to the oven for 7-9 minutes, or until cheese is melted and veggies are crisp tender.
  • ENJOY: Remove and allow to cool for 1 minute. If desired, drizzle each pizza with another 1/2 teaspoon olive oil, and then top with shredded basil and a few sprinkles of fine sea salt if desired. Use a sharp serrated knife to cut into slices and enjoy immediately.
